8. 2693 An Examination of Art: Jonathan Lasker.

This paper examines Lasker's art, the author comes to the understanding that there is a fine line in what painting actually says. All of Lasker's work is art, no matter how ambiguous it is. In one sense, he is the abstract expressionist struggling for the authentic gesture and the distracted student doodling on a notepad. There appear to be unconscious scrawls but also controlled elements that are carefully integrated into a larger composition. 4 pgs. 4 f/c. 3b.

9. 2749 The Self-Portraits of Rembrandt and Bernini.

Both Rembrandt and Bernini painted self-portraits, and both were keen to manipulate the self-images they presented to the public, in certain ways. There are similarities in their perspectives on self-portraits as well as significant differences. One of the most important differences is the fact that Bernini's most compelling self-image appeared in works actually depicting others (David e.g.), while Rembrandt was fond of painting himself as himself. 5 pgs. 10 f/c. 4b.

10. 2802 Richard Wagner and Medieval Germanic Myth.

Richard Wagner, the monumental composer, dramatist, philosopher, and poet of nineteenth century Germany transformed the tradition of German music and art through the unique genius of his work. Wagner believed that art, in order to be powerful and fundamental to a nation, must be founded upon a myth that is shared by all those that encounter the art. Dissatisfied with the already developed tradition of Greek myth from Homer and onward, Wagner believed that somewhere in history, the myth fundamental to the distinct German spirit could be found and developed. 14 pgs. 35 f/c. 10b.

13. 4165 Botticelli's Mystical Nativity; Reclaiming Medieval Symbolism in a Pagan Age.

This is an in-depth analysis of Sandro Botticelli's painting "The Mystical Nativity" (1500). It includes an analysis of the aesthetic, symbolic, and formal elements of the painting, as well as a short biography of the painter and a section on the theological implications of the painting. As a traditional Christian theme, the nativity is one of the most popular. This radical reinterpretation, however, combines symbolism from Revelation with the scene of the first coming of the messiah, creating a dynamic image. The style is a throwback to medieval formalism, and the distorted figures are a reference to a holier time, perhaps influenced by the resurgence of medieval ideology in the person of Savonarola, whose ideas heavily influenced this painting. The paper can serve as a demonstration of understanding of Renaissance religious symbolism, or as a deep analysis of a single work of art from the quattrocento. 13 pgs. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
